This message is often used to present the profession.<\/div>
<\/div>
It\u2019s inspiring, but at times it borders on sounding more like a marketing pitch and a scam than quality training!<\/div>
<\/div>
It makes you want to contribute to others\u2019 well-being.<\/div>
<\/div>
But it also deserves to be accompanied by deeper reflection.<\/div>
<\/div>
Because working in a helping relationship with an animal is not simply about loving animals and wanting to help people.<\/div>
<\/div>
It\u2019s a professional responsibility.<\/div>
<\/div>
A profession first and foremost<\/div>
<\/div>
Like any helping profession, animal-assisted interventions require skills that go far beyond passion.<\/div>
<\/div>
The professional must understand the needs of different client groups.<\/div>
<\/div>
Know how to set objectives.<\/div>
<\/div>
Observe the effects of the interventions.<\/div>
<\/div>
Continuously adapt their practice.<\/div>
<\/div>
Collaborate with other professionals.<\/div>
<\/div>
Recognize the limits of their scope of practice.<\/div>
<\/div>
And protect their animal\u2019s well-being as much as that of the participants.<\/div>
<\/div>
These skills are developed through rigorous training and supervised practice.<\/div>
<\/div>
A reality that is often forgotten.<\/div>
<\/div>
Making a living from this profession also means accepting a reality that can sometimes be demanding.<\/div>
<\/div>
Settings want quality interventions.<\/div>
<\/div>
They want professionals who can explain their approach.<\/div>
<\/div>
They need to be able to trust that participants will be safe.<\/div>
<\/div>
And that the animal will be protected too.<\/div>
<\/div>
And that the objectives pursued are based on a solid methodology.<\/div>
<\/div>
This trust isn\u2019t built on passion alone.<\/div>
<\/div>
It\u2019s built through competence.<\/div>
<\/div>
A concrete example<\/div>
<\/div>
Two people want to offer helping services with their dog.<\/div>
<\/div>
The first has a very sociable dog and strong motivation.<\/div>
<\/div>
The second also has an excellent dog, but she has learned to select objectives, structure interactions, observe effects, recognize the limits of her intervention, and protect the well-being of her animal partner.<\/div>
<\/div>
Both deeply love animals.<\/div>
<\/div>
But only one of the two is able to demonstrate a structured professional practice.<\/div>
<\/div>
This difference matters.<\/div>
<\/div>
For participants as much as for the settings that choose their professionals.<\/div>
<\/div>
A shared responsibility<\/div>
<\/div>
This reflection also concerns the settings that host animal-assisted intervention services.<\/div>
<\/div>
When they choose a professional, they are not just choosing a friendly person accompanied by a well-liked animal.<\/div>
<\/div>
They entrust this team with the responsibility of intervening with people who may be vulnerable.<\/div>
<\/div>
They therefore have a responsibility to verify competencies, the methodology used, the animal\u2019s preparation, its assessment, and its certification.<\/div>
<\/div>
These requirements are not meant to make access to the profession more difficult.<\/div>
<\/div>
They are meant to protect the public, professionals, and animals.<\/div>
<\/div>
A profession that deserves recognition<\/div>
<\/div>
Human\u2013animal interactions can produce remarkable effects.<\/div>
<\/div>
But these effects should never rely solely on an animal\u2019s qualities or on an intervenor\u2019s goodwill.<\/strong><\/div>
<\/div>
They should be grounded in a human\u2013animal interaction methodology, rigorous selection of the animal partner, an assessment of its aptitudes, progressive preparation, and certification that demonstrate a truly professional practice.<\/div>
<\/div>
Because the question isn\u2019t only:<\/div>
<\/div>
“Can you make a living from zootherapy?”<\/div>
<\/div>
The real question is:<\/strong><\/div>
<\/div>
“Are we ready to practise this profession with all the rigour it requires?”<\/strong><\/div>
<\/div>

A profession is not defined by the passion it inspires, but by the responsibility it demands.<\/strong><\/h3>
