It will be much easier during interventions.&#8221;<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">This is a widespread idea.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">And yet, it deserves some nuance.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Because a calm dog is often easier to manage&#8230;<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">But is it always the best partner for achieving the goals of an intervention?<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">At Synergie Plumes et Poils, we believe the question isn&#8217;t about choosing between a calm dog or an active dog.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">The real question is:<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Are we capable of guiding an engaged dog?<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">The most common mistake<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">When a dog is very calm, it often requires little intervention from the professional.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">It stays lying down.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">It waits.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">It moves very little.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">This reality is reassuring.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Conversely, an engaged dog observes, moves around, offers behaviors, returns to its handler, takes an interest in its environment, and actively participates in interactions.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Without a methodology, this energy can seem difficult to manage.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">The professional might then be tempted to look for an even calmer dog.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">But are we really looking for the best partner or the easiest one to manage?<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">The SPP methodology perspective<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">At Synergie Plumes et Poils, we don&#8217;t seek to decrease the dog&#8217;s engagement.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">We seek to teach them how to modulate it.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">A partner animal should be able to take a calmer or more still position for a short period when asked by their handler.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Then, when the intervention requires it, they should be able to become active, mobile, and engaged again.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Stillness is therefore not a permanent state.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">It&#8217;s one skill among others.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Movement is also a skill.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">So is engagement.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">The ability to alternate between these different states is what makes an animal truly available for the helping relationship.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Professional practice develops flexibility<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Training a partner animal isn&#8217;t about building a dog that stays still for an hour.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">It&#8217;s about developing a dog capable of adapting to the needs of the intervention.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Sometimes, the context will require a few moments of calm.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">At other times, you&#8217;ll need a dog that moves, participates, explores, or interacts.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\">A training methodology specific to the helping relationship allows for the development of this flexibility without extinguishing the animal&#8217;s motivation or natural engagement.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><div dir=\"auto\"><strong>Because a dog that wants to participate is an asset.<\/strong><\/div><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><h3 dir=\"auto\"><strong>But you still need to know how to support this energy rather than trying to make it disappear.<\/strong><\/h3><div dir=\"auto\"> <\/div><h3 dir=\"auto\"><strong>It&#8217;s easy to manage a dog that does nothing.
