And yet, it deserves some nuance.<\/div>
<\/div>
Because a calm dog is often easier to manage…<\/div>
<\/div>
But is it always the best partner for achieving the goals of an intervention?<\/div>
<\/div>
At Synergie Plumes et Poils, we believe the question isn’t about choosing between a calm dog or an active dog.<\/div>

Are we capable of guiding an engaged dog?<\/div>
<\/div>
The most common mistake<\/div>
<\/div>
When a dog is very calm, it often requires little intervention from the professional.<\/div>
<\/div>
It stays lying down.<\/div>
<\/div>
It waits.<\/div>
<\/div>
It moves very little.<\/div>
<\/div>
This reality is reassuring.<\/div>
<\/div>
Conversely, an engaged dog observes, moves around, offers behaviors, returns to its handler, takes an interest in its environment, and actively participates in interactions.<\/div>
<\/div>
Without a methodology, this energy can seem difficult to manage.<\/div>
<\/div>
The professional might then be tempted to look for an even calmer dog.<\/div>
<\/div>
But are we really looking for the best partner or the easiest one to manage?<\/div>

We seek to teach them how to modulate it.<\/div>

A partner animal should be able to take a calmer or more still position for a short period when asked by their handler.<\/div>

Then, when the intervention requires it, they should be able to become active, mobile, and engaged again.<\/div>

Stillness is therefore not a permanent state.<\/div>
<\/div>
It’s one skill among others.<\/div>
<\/div>
Movement is also a skill.<\/div>
<\/div>
So is engagement.<\/div>
<\/div>
The ability to alternate between these different states is what makes an animal truly available for the helping relationship.<\/div>

Professional practice develops flexibility<\/div>
<\/div>
Training a partner animal isn’t about building a dog that stays still for an hour.<\/div>
<\/div>
It’s about developing a dog capable of adapting to the needs of the intervention.<\/div>
<\/div>
Sometimes, the context will require a few moments of calm.<\/div>
<\/div>
At other times, you’ll need a dog that moves, participates, explores, or interacts.<\/div>
<\/div>
A training methodology specific to the helping relationship allows for the development of this flexibility without extinguishing the animal’s motivation or natural engagement.<\/div>
<\/div>
Because a dog that wants to participate is an asset.<\/strong><\/div>
<\/div>

But you still need to know how to support this energy rather than trying to make it disappear.<\/strong><\/h3>
