But when an animal is integrated into the intervention, a new reality emerges.<\/div>

It’s no longer just about thinking with our clinical perspective.<\/div>
<\/div>
We must now consider the interactions between two living partners: the human and the animal.<\/strong><\/div>

The most common mistake<\/strong><\/h3>
<\/div>
When a professional aims to achieve a goal, they naturally think of the strategies they usually employ.<\/div>
<\/div>
A child is anxious?<\/div>
<\/div>
We want to reassure them.<\/div>
<\/div>
Someone is sad?<\/div>
<\/div>
We want to offer them comfort.<\/div>
<\/div>
A client is crying?<\/div>
<\/div>
We spontaneously invite the dog to come closer.<\/div>
<\/div>
These decisions are often driven by genuine goodwill.<\/div>
<\/div>
But an essential question is sometimes forgotten:<\/div>
<\/div>
Why integrate the animal at this precise moment?<\/strong><\/div>
<\/div>
What added value does it truly bring to the objective being pursued?<\/strong><\/div>
<\/div>

Is the animal participating because it’s the best option, or simply because it’s present?<\/strong><\/h3>
<\/div>

It suggests asking:<\/div>

“What is my objective? Which human-animal interaction will best support it? And does the animal truly bring added value at this moment?”<\/strong><\/div>
<\/div>
This shift in perspective profoundly transforms practice.<\/div>
<\/div>
A concrete example<\/div>
<\/div>
A specialized educator is supporting a child who has great difficulty managing frustration.<\/div>
<\/div>
Seeing the child start to cry, her first instinct is to call the dog to come comfort them.<\/div>
<\/div>
Then she stops.<\/div>
<\/div>
She reflects with her methodological perspective.<\/div>
<\/div>
Is her goal to quickly calm the child?<\/div>
<\/div>
Or does she want to help them develop regulation strategies that they can reuse in their daily life?<\/div>
<\/div>
She then chooses to help the child recognize what they are feeling, identify the means that help them regain calm, and experiment with different strategies.<\/div>
<\/div>
Only after this step is completed does she gradually reintegrate the animal into the activity so that the child can practice these new strategies in a real interaction.<\/div>

The animal was not used to avoid the emotion.<\/div>

It helped consolidate learning.<\/div>
<\/div>
That makes all the difference.<\/div>

Before integrating an animal, the professional can take a few moments to ask themselves several questions.<\/div>
<\/div>
What exactly is my intervention objective?<\/div>
<\/div>
What skill do I want to develop?<\/div>
<\/div>
In what way does the animal represent true added value?<\/div>
<\/div>
Is there one interaction more relevant than another?<\/div>
<\/div>
Is there a time when it would be better for the animal to simply remain an observer?<\/div>
<\/div>
This reflection allows for the construction of much more coherent and meaningful interventions.<\/div>
<\/div>
Professional practice is based on a way of thinking<\/div>
<\/div>
Expertise in helping relationships is essential.<\/div>
<\/div>
Knowledge about animals is just as important.<\/div>
<\/div>
But neither of these expertises alone is sufficient to build a quality animal-assisted intervention.<\/div>
<\/div>
Professional practice relies on a methodology capable of connecting the client’s needs, the animal’s capabilities, the objectives pursued, and the interactions that will produce the desired effects.<\/div>
