Is knowing the human and knowing the dog really a methodology?

When we talk about methodology in animal-assisted intervention, I often hear the same response.

<\/div>
“I know my dog well and his signals.”

<\/div>
“I’m already a professional in helping relationships.”

<\/div>
And then?

<\/div>
Yes, you should know the human.

<\/div>
Yes, you should know your animal partner.

<\/div>
These are the basics.

<\/div>
But if that were enough, all animal-assisted interventions would look the same.

<\/div>
Yet, that’s not the case.

<\/div>
Why?

<\/div>
Because knowing two variables doesn’t mean knowing what happens between them.<\/div>
We often observe the human on one side.

<\/div>
The dog on the other.

<\/div>
But animal-assisted intervention doesn’t reside in one or the other.

<\/div>
It resides in the interaction.

<\/div>
This interaction becomes the object of observation.

<\/div>
Who initiates contact?

<\/div>
How does the other respond?

<\/div>
What happens when a behavior changes?

<\/div>
What does this response reveal?

<\/div>
How does the practitioner influence this dynamic?

<\/div>
How does the animal influence the client?

<\/div>
And how does the client, in turn, influence the animal?

<\/div>

This is where a methodology truly begins.<\/strong><\/h3>
A methodology doesn’t just consist of knowing two living beings.

<\/div>
It consists of knowing how to create, observe, measure, and adapt their interactions based on a specific objective.

<\/div>
It requires a protocol.

<\/div>
Steps.

<\/div>
Observation criteria.

<\/div>
Ways to evaluate whether the interaction actually produces the desired effect.<\/strong>

<\/div>
It allows us to answer questions like:

<\/div>
Why did I choose this interaction rather than another?

<\/div>
What am I observing in the client?

<\/div>
What am I observing in the animal partner?

<\/div>
What indicators show me that I’m moving toward my objective?

<\/div>
What do I modify if the interaction doesn’t produce the expected effects?

<\/div>
How will I reinvest this learning when the animal is no longer present?

<\/div>
When these questions find structured answers, we move beyond simple animal presence.

<\/div>
We enter into true professional practice.

<\/div>
In my view, the animal is not a tool that we add to an already existing intervention.

<\/div>
It becomes a partner with whom we build targeted interactions.

<\/div>
And these interactions are not improvised.

<\/div>
They are thought out.

<\/div>
Observed.

<\/div>
Adjusted.

<\/div>
Measured.

<\/div>
This is perhaps the greatest difference between having a dog by your side and practicing true animal-assisted intervention.<\/strong>

<\/div>
Because ultimately, a methodology doesn’t just seek to know who the human is or who the animal is.<\/strong>

<\/div>
