Providing a welcome presence.<\/div>
<\/div>
These effects are real.<\/div>
<\/div>
However, an important question needs to be asked.<\/div>
<\/div>
Is the presence of an animal, on its own, an animal-assisted intervention?<\/div>
<\/div>

The most common mistake<\/div>
<\/div>
It is easy to assume that because an animal is present daily in a classroom, residence, or facility, the benefits will automatically follow.<\/div>
<\/div>
Yet, presence alone does not constitute a methodology.<\/div>
<\/div>
An intervention implies a specific goal.<\/div>
<\/div>
Thoughtful interactions.<\/div>
<\/div>
Ongoing observations.<\/div>
<\/div>
Necessary adjustments.<\/div>
<\/div>
And above all, a deep respect for the animal’s well-being.<\/div>
<\/div>
An animal living in a classroom all day does not only participate in positive interactions.<\/div>
<\/div>
They are also exposed to a multitude of situations that they do not choose.<\/div>
<\/div>
Let\u2019s put ourselves in the animal’s place for a moment.<\/div>
<\/div>
All day long, students come and go.<\/div>
<\/div>
The noise level is constantly changing.<\/div>
<\/div>
There is a lot of movement.<\/div>
<\/div>
Emotions shift rapidly.<\/div>
<\/div>
Some children want to pet them.<\/div>
<\/div>
Others are running.<\/div>
<\/div>
Others are shouting.<\/div>
<\/div>
Sometimes, several people seek the animal’s attention at once.<\/div>
<\/div>
Do they have a space where no one can disturb them?<\/div>
<\/div>
Can they choose to withdraw?<\/div>
<\/div>
Do they have free access to water?<\/div>
<\/div>
To their food?<\/div>
<\/div>
Can they sleep without being woken up?<\/div>
<\/div>
Can they simply decide not to interact?<\/div>
<\/div>
All of these questions directly concern their well-being.<\/div>
<\/div>
An everyday example<\/div>
<\/div>
At home, your dog spends a significant part of the day sleeping.<\/div>
<\/div>
They regularly move from one spot to another.<\/div>
<\/div>
They go outside when they feel the need.<\/div>
<\/div>
They drink.<\/div>
<\/div>
They eat.<\/div>
<\/div>
They seek solitude.<\/div>
<\/div>
They come to see you when they want to.<\/div>
<\/div>
They naturally manage their own balance.<\/div>
<\/div>
No one expects them to be available at all times.<\/div>
<\/div>
An example in helping relationships<\/div>
<\/div>
A school wants to integrate a dog into a classroom five days a week.<\/div>
<\/div>
The intention is excellent.<\/div>
<\/div>
But even before discussing the effects on students, several questions should be addressed.<\/div>
<\/div>
Who monitors the dog’s well-being on a daily basis?<\/div>
<\/div>
Do they have a space inaccessible to students where they can truly recover?<\/div>
<\/div>
How are the interactions structured?<\/div>
<\/div>
What moments allow them to release built-up tension?<\/div>
<\/div>
How do we recognize when they need a break?<\/div>
<\/div>
Who decides when it is time to end an interaction?<\/div>
<\/div>
Has the dog been selected, prepared, and evaluated to function in an environment where the unexpected is constant?<\/div>
<\/div>
An animal-assisted intervention is not about making a dog available all day long.<\/div>
<\/div>
It consists of building targeted interactions, limited in time and based on specific goals, while protecting the animal’s well-being.<\/div>
<\/div>
A professional practice also protects the animal.<\/div>
<\/div>
The partner animal is not a pedagogical tool.<\/div>
<\/div>
They are a living being participating in an intervention.<\/div>
<\/div>
Their well-being must be evaluated with as much rigor as the intended effects on the beneficiaries.<\/div>
<\/div>
This means reflecting on their environment, mobility, rest periods, access to water, nutrition, personal space, and their actual ability to choose whether or not to participate.<\/div>
<\/div>
This reflection cannot rely solely on good intentions.<\/div>
<\/div>
It requires a methodology for human-animal interactions, a rigorous selection of the partner animal, an assessment of their aptitudes, progressive preparation for the realities of the environment, and a certification confirming that the human-animal team is ready to intervene safely.<\/div>
<\/div>
Because in a helping relationship, the question is not only:<\/div>
<\/div>
\u201cDo the students like the dog?\u201d<\/div>
<\/div>

The real question is:<\/strong><\/h2>
<\/div>
\u201cCan the dog function in this environment while sustainably preserving their well-being?\u201d<\/strong><\/div>
<\/div>
