They provide the answer, correct, take over, or find the solution themselves. While these gestures are well-intentioned, they can sometimes limit opportunities for the child to develop confidence, autonomy, and problem-solving skills.

Intervention goals for parents can be numerous: improving communication, supporting emotions, fostering independence, developing confidence, strengthening the parent-child bond, or adopting new educational strategies.

As with any intervention, an important question arises:

Will integrating an animal bring real added value to this objective?

Why integrate an animal?

The animal allows the parent to concretely observe the effect of how they interact.

Because it is a living partner, it reacts to the behaviors of both the parent and the child. Interactions then become a laboratory where the parent can experiment with different ways of supporting their child and observe the effects in real time.

The goal isn’t to evaluate parenting skills, but to provide a supportive environment where the parent can discover new ways to intervene.

For these experiences to be enriching, the choice of the animal partner is essential.

At Synergie Plumes et Poils, we prioritize an animal motivated to participate in interactions. An engaged partner makes it possible to create varied experiences while respecting their well-being, even when activities evolve or unexpected situations arise.

A concrete example

Take the example of a parent who wants to further encourage their child’s independence but steps in very quickly as soon as a difficulty appears.

The practitioner’s goal is to help this parent develop strategies that will allow their child to experiment, reflect, and gradually find their own solutions.

Before proposing challenges, the practitioner observes the interactions between the parent, the child, and the animal.

When does the parent give their child space?

When do they step in spontaneously?

How do they encourage their child?

How do they react when the child hesitates or makes a mistake?

Based on these observations, the practitioner creates tailored activities.

For example, the parent and child must guide a dog through a small course together. The child makes the decisions, while the parent’s challenge is to support them without making choices for them.

During the activity, the practitioner helps the parent experiment with different strategies: asking a question instead of giving the answer, waiting a few seconds before intervening, valuing attempts, encouraging reflection, or recognizing effort rather than the result.

The parent then observes how these adjustments influence their child’s participation, engagement, and confidence.

The goal isn’t for the dog to complete the course perfectly.

The goal is for the parent to discover ways of supporting their child that gradually foster independence.

Transfer to daily life

The lessons learned during interactions with the animal can then be applied to family life.

The parent will be able to use these same strategies when their child gets dressed, packs their school bag, resolves a conflict, does homework, or learns a new skill.

Interactions with the animal thus become a concrete context where the parent experiments with tools that they can then adapt to many everyday situations.

Professional practice relies on quality training

Human-animal interactions offer tremendous potential, but they require much more than just the presence of an animal.

Professional practice requires understanding the family’s needs, determining if the animal provides real added value, selecting an animal partner whose characteristics match the pursued goals, and building meaningful interactions.

It also requires recognizing the animal’s needs, preserving its well-being, and ensuring the safety of all involved.

Being a professional also means recognizing the limits of one’s scope of practice. The practitioner must be able to identify situations that require the expertise of other professionals and work in collaboration with them when the family’s needs require it.

At Synergie Plumes et Poils, we believe that responsible practice is based on a rigorous methodology, respect for animal welfare, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the selection and certification of animal partners to offer ethical, safe interventions tailored to each family’s needs.

How can you help a parent support their child while fostering independence instead of doing things for them?
