But one question deserves to be asked:

What are you really observing—and above all, what do you do with it?

Because watching an animal and observing it are two very different things.

Watching lets you see.

Observing lets you understand.

Anyone can see that a dog sits down.

That it moves away.

That it looks elsewhere.

That it takes a reward.

That it slows down.

That it speeds up.

But these behaviors, on their own, still don’t tell you what to do.

They become interesting only when they lead the professional to think:

Why is it acting this way?

What is it trying to communicate?

What is it teaching me about the interaction we are experiencing right now?

An observation has value only if it influences a decision.

That is probably the biggest difference between watching and observing.

True observation changes what happens next in the intervention.

The professional may decide to wait.

To slow down.

To adjust the distance.

To change the level of difficulty.

To remove pressure.

To offer a different interaction.

Or, on the contrary, to continue because everything indicates that the partner animal is engaged and available.

Observation then becomes a decision-making tool.

It is not used only to describe what is happening.

It is used to guide what will happen next.

A methodology teaches you to observe differently.

At Synergie Plumes et Poils, we don’t just aim to teach animal behavior.

We aim to teach how to use these behaviors.

What does this response mean in this specific context?

Which variable most likely influenced this reaction?

What can we change to test our hypothesis?

Observation then becomes a true process of reflection.

The professional is no longer looking only for answers.

They build hypotheses.

They test them.

Then they adjust their intervention.

Observing also means observing the human.

Our focus never stops at the animal.

We also observe the client:

Their posture.

Their pace.

Their breathing.

Their gaze.

Their distance.

Their hesitations.

Then we observe the interaction between the two.

That is often where the richest information is found.

Because it’s not only the behaviors that matter.

It’s the way they influence each other.

A skill that transforms the entire practice.

When a professional learns to observe this way, they never look at an intervention the same way again.

Every behavior becomes information.

Every interaction becomes an opportunity to understand better.

Every adjustment becomes a considered decision.

It is precisely this way of observing that then makes it possible to build interventions that are more consistent, safer, and more effective.

Because, in the end, a professional’s role is not only to see what is happening.

Their role is to understand what these observations are telling them—and to do something with it.

Watching lets you see a behavior. Observing lets you shape the next decision.

One of the phrases we hear most often is: “I observe my dog a lot.” And that’s an excellent habit.
