What a Presence!
Many Quebec households have a pet. In many cases, it is considered a full-fledged family member. Its presence brings joy to both adults and children. For all the well-being it brings me, can I conclude that the relationship between my pet and me is animal-assisted therapy? True or false?
FALSE. There are many benefits to owning a pet. To name just a few examples of these benefits, our pet is a confidant who listens without judgment, accepting us in our experiences. Some will even say that an animal is capable of sensing a person’s moods or illness. Animal presence also helps overcome loneliness by entertaining its owner or by providing a reason to exercise and meet people. Furthermore, the animal becomes the subject of many conversations and facilitates social interactions in a relaxed atmosphere. It can also be a source of pleasure for many children. In summary, owning a pet means that a special attachment and relationship has developed with this being who shares our life and brings us great well-being.
Despite all the benefits that the presence of our pet brings, it is important not to confuse this human-animal relationship with animal-assisted therapy. Compared to simply having an animal at home, animal-assisted therapy is a therapy assisted by an animal where a professional oversees the achievement of specific therapeutic goals. These goals are addressed in a directed and organized context, based on the client’s particular difficulties and needs. Furthermore, the animal used in animal-assisted therapy is specifically selected to help the patient achieve their personalized goals. Animal-assisted therapy therefore utilizes the beneficial effects of the human-animal bond (stimulation, development of social relationships, non-judgmental presence, etc.) for a very specific therapeutic purpose, ultimately aiming to improve the client’s condition.
In short, even if the relationship you have with your pet cannot be called animal-assisted therapy, it can still provide you with true well-being. That is why I encourage you to continue enjoying the human-animal relationship you share with your faithful companion. However, keep in mind that an animal-assisted therapist will maximize animal presence to help you make positive progress with your specific needs!
