Johanne Bélanger

Special education teacher and animal-assisted therapy practitioner

In 1992, she moved to Trois-Rivières to take on new challenges. She secured a job as a caregiver for adult clients with intellectual disabilities at the CRDI of that time. Thus began a second career. After returning to her studies, she worked as a substitute teacher in high schools for 3 years in special education classes. The following years led her to teach primary school children living with various daily disabilities. Down syndrome, dyslexia, dyspraxia, deafness, dysphasia, multiple disabilities, ASD, and various mental health issues are among the particularities encountered in these “extra”ordinary young learners. For about twenty years, she has been part of the large team at the Marie-Leneuf supra-regional school in Trois-Rivières, which welcomes approximately 120 students from the region with special needs. For the past 3 years, she has dedicated herself to students with severe to profound motor and intellectual disabilities. Inspired by the beneficial effects of animal presence, animal-assisted therapy training has brought a breath of fresh air and creativity to her professional practice.

Mélissa Robitaille

Specialized educator and animal-assisted therapist

Having been involved in the field of clients with special needs since the age of 13, Mélissa had the opportunity to discover her passion for her profession in a community organization for intellectual and physical disabilities (Laura Lémerveil), where she worked for 10 years during her high school and college studies. This enriching experience led her to her profession in specialized education, and also allowed her to forge her approach with the various clienteles she works with today. She has practiced in diverse settings such as primary schools, special education, schools for adults with intellectual disabilities, youth centers, and daycares. Always having had a desire to help people differently, Mélissa studied at the International School of Animal-Assisted Therapy in 2015-2016. Today, she has her own business, Mélissa Robitaille Intervention Services, in animal-assisted therapy and specialized education, in which she advocates for self-fulfillment.

She firmly believes that every difficulty can be overcome and addressed. One must only take the time to discover the needs hidden behind behaviors. She intervenes with her animals in institutions and families with diverse clienteles such as mental health, intellectual and physical disabilities, autism, seniors, substance abuse, social reintegration, children, anxious individuals, people with behavioral disorders, or with attention and concentration difficulties. She also receives her clients at her equestrian mini-farm in Portneuf County to work with horses or smaller animals.
